Kadie Lehmburg
16 - Survivor
History:
She wrote one once. A history. Well, drew one... STARTED one. A comic biography and it went on for a grand total of twelve pages with the first debut of a mummified, zombie, Ancient Egyptian priestess on page three…
Suffice to say Kadie preferred her own version of reality and she’d been dreaming it up for longer than she remembers. Things were black and white in her universe, she understood every player of the game more intimately than any lover, she controlled every aspect of it to her liking, even the bad bits were just thrilling.
In this world she didn’t have a dad.
As harsh as it sounded Kadie had grown up with one absent parent and one all too present… and she was quite comfortable without a mom, used to it.
Something wasn’t… right with her father. One of her earliest memories is chasing after the shape of his legs in a crowd, scared witless about losing the man who didn’t believe in dropping pace for a four year old…
He wasn’t a BAD man, she’s very insistent of this, Kadie KNEW what bad was and her Pa was not it! He just… he didn’t think sometimes and he lost his temper real easy… but he always did right by her and sometimes he’d come home with little presents that had reminded him of her during the day.
He loved and struggled in life… it was just… well, he turned into a monster after a drink and the problem was that was all he did when he got home.
Kadie knew a bit about work… it was stressful. And it put a roof over their heads and it made her learn ‘independence’, so complaining was ‘gainst the rules kind of thing, but she always wished he didn’t have to go…
Then, one day, you know what that sonovabitch got her for Christmas?
A sudden move to a new house, a new school (friends wasn’t the issue, it wasn’t as though she was too popular at the old one… what kind of person wants to go ghost hunting with a GIRL! And no way was she making bracelets or suffering makeovers.) and a new mom!
Or at least THAT’S what her dad told her to call the strange woman they were suddenly gonna move in with! There had been no discussion, no signs to say anything, I mean, he’d gone away on business trips, but…
Oh…
Oh right…
But she did gain a brother, the kids at school all bitched about their siblings, but Kadie couldn’t help but to be just a little excited… all her comics now included a brother figure, separated at birth, but completely parallel and awesome as her protagonist in every way! Sometimes they’d team up, other times their destinies were doomed to a reluctant, epic rivalry, but either way a new star joined the cast and he was Tarantino COOL!
Nath… for a while Nath couldn’t do wrong in her eyes… she was too nervous and a little suspicious of him to really get to know him at first, but she helped him out in every little way she could (like saying hi and passing him shit… bit pedestrian, she knows, but talking was not her strong point and no WAY was he ever gonna see her stories!)and tried to awkwardly let him know mi casa su casa or however it goes!
But then dad and him start fightin’, Nath leaves, dad gets… worse (she always told this part with a shudder, usually staring at her shoes with a sad smirk, skimming as many details as she can get away with) “and… the worst part is I don’t hear from him… I’m too scared to call him myself after some of the stupid mistakes dad’s made, what if he thinks it’s my fault, what if he’s not okay and…
--Wow! Then one day the guys on my forum are BUZZING about this zombie thing—some indie newsletter about re-animating corpses in Scandinavia, whatever—I write it off. They love conspiracy shit like that! But then it stops being a conspiracy, they’re brushing over reports on the news, like, telling the zombie stories, but trying to make it sound like it’s not that big a deal.
Meanwhile the end-of-the-world nutjobs are going nuts!
There are riots in the supermarkets! I wanna warn dad, but… can you imagine him believing it? I’d be banging my head against a brick wall! So… I tell my step mom, she’s a good friend and keeps it secret, but helps me build an inventory cache! I know she’s only doing it to keep me happy, but three first aid kits are better than none, right?
I couldn’t trust dad to defend us, what if things went bad while he were drunk and with Nathan gone awol I took it upon myself to sneak the gun from dads wardrobe (gross by the way, thanks for asking!) and train shooting cans out in the sticks.
Dad thought I was seeing a boy, still got the bruise to prove it!
All the while my contacts scoured the web and got excited. It was fucking awesome! Society had never seen something like this, we were slap bang in the middle of a huge historical event! Which was cool right about until the part where it actually happened. Then it was very… very… real…”
She won’t talk about what happened next, when it came to her doorstep.
Just… Nathan came home. That’s all that mattered.
Nathan came home.

Personality:
• Tomboy / fantasy geek
Like any good little girl, Kadies room was covered with… comic book pages and B-movie posters! She collected figurines, sketched up her own stories, took an old video camera (which she still religiously keeps up with)ghost hunting and exploring. Before things… before everyone… just before she lived in a fantasy of ghouls, monsters and haggard hero’s emerging from the shadows… and who could blame her, her home life sucked ass.
Now she lives in a reality of it and would do anything to go back.
• Idealistic, but has her feet firmly planted.
- Influenced by the stories she loved, Kadie’s built an odd honour code all of her own. She thinks a lot for a kid and realizes she isn’t always right, as much as it frustrates her and, although she’ll speak up for her morals, she accepts the decision of those she trusts. Believe you me, when she places her trust in you she does so completely and utterly, keeping no secrets (unless they’re yours) and acting on your word with a sense of faith.
• Not a quick learner, but a damn trier!
- Okay, so she might shake when holding a gun, so what if she crashed the car when she had her first go (blame Nath! Dad went nuts!), sure she nearly breaks bones every time she attempts climbing, Kadie won’t let that that stop her practicing until she gets it!
• Too trusting and still a little naïve
- Clever as Kadie might be, she’s got no real experience of people, she sees things in black and white and can’t understand why anyone she meets would do her wrong if she doesn’t do them wrong…
On the other hand she gets jumpy and anxious around men, but still to the exact same ends, she emotionally folds in on herself and does what she’s told by them out of fear.
• Gobby. Talks back and argues childishly with people she’s comfortable around.
- I’m sorry… we held the gates for as long as we could… but it got her… PUBERTY! Stand back, ladies and gentlemen, we’ve got danger zone level ‘tude here! Watch out, we got a badass!
Hormones have significantly shortened her fuse making her prone to short outbursts and sudden tearful spells.
Particularly with all the stress of everything going on… she’s almost a broken child at this stage.
