CLAIRE A. MCGUIRE
15 - Straggler
PERSONALITY
Growing up, she was always the weird kid. She liked all the scary stuff and spent her time drawing monsters, making up horror stories, watching slasher movies. For a while, this got her picked on, and for a long time, it did bother her. However, after making a couple of mistakes, she decided to embrace her interests. Now, she doesn't really let insults get to her, and instead will be extra nice to people who are bad to her.
The apocalypse didn't really hit her as hard as it should have. She didn't freak out like her friends did, instead she just got as many supplies as she could, and went out. The only thing that really bothered her about it was all the death. That's something she hated. The first time she saw a zombie, her first instinct was to kill it, and after inspecting the body, she realized that this.. thing.. was once a person.
Although it saddens her that these creatures were once people, she won't hesitate to off one. Not having any current access to long-range weapons, she used anything around to rid of the monsters. Her favorite things to use are traps and fire.
Claire isn't one to try and hurt anyone, and really likes making friends. She believes allies are better than enemies, but if she finds someone who is doing something 'majorly fucked', she'll gladly leave them for dead. This applies to anyone who could be a danger to those she cares about's well being. If she can't fix them, she'll get rid of them.
Other than that, as previously stated, she can be really friendly, and tries not to push anyone away. She gets along better with younger people, or at least people who act younger.
HISTORY
Claire was a kid who liked the strange stuff of the world.. monsters, gore movies, anything supernatural.. and she was picked on for what she this. No one accepted her, and even her mother kept her distance from her daughter. Eventually, Claire was willing to do anything for someone to like her. Especially if the person that liked her was Julian Takei, the "bad boy" of the school. So, she changed for him, rebelling against the school and the popular kids, and she liked it!
Claire thought that kicking in doors and smashing pots, throwing toilet paper on houses, she thought all of this was so fun. Especially now that Julian noticed her. Julian and Claire and all of his buddies really messed with a lot of people. This got her into loads of trouble, especially when it came to the decision of taking the blame.. for someone's murder. She wouldn't, despite how much
she liked the guy, and told everyone the truth. Julian wasn't charged with anything too harsh, but no one at school thought he was cool anymore.
After that bit of drama, she didn't talk to Julian anymore, but kept acting out. More kids noticed her, and these kids were the ones who thought she was really cool. And why? Because she expressed herself. All these kids were the outcasts. They were the weird kids now, and after realizing that, she decided she'd join them. That's the thing about Claire, she often tries to hard and gets herself in trouble.
Even with her new love, Tristan Tate, she tried far too hard, and once he moved back home to Ontario, Canada, she started saving money to visit him. For months, she saved, and when she finally got there.. Tristan was with someone else. Now, if it wasn't clear, Claire's heart was going to be hard to win from then on. But what did it matter? By the time she got home, people were eating people.
During the apocalypse, her friends had either left with their families, or ended their lives.. fortunately for Claire, it all happened to fast, she didn't have any time to mourn. Her mother and her brother didn't survive, and her sister disappeared. Claire wasn't alone for long though.
She found a group that was staying in hospital. The group consisted of nurses and police men, and a couple of patients. All of them had helpful jobs, like Jacob, who was a teacher, and Mary, who sold.. guns.. Jacob would teach people about history, math, and science, while Mary taught them how to handle a firearm. Out of all of the people though, Claire was closest to an older man named Georgie. He was from Kentucky, and had only come down to Georgia to visit his momma. He showed up with a couple of his friends, who eventually passed away. Georgie and Claire treated each other like family. He looked to her like a daughter, and in a way, she felt like he was her new father. Claire had never knew her own. At the beginning, this group was very welcoming to others, but once supplies started running out, and people started getting sick.. that changed.
Jacob was a science teacher originally, and he was big on experiments having to do with biology and chemistry. Only the leaders of the group knew about Jacob's experiments on what they called The Hungry. The leaders were an old man, a doctor, Mary, and Georgie. Of course, Georgie would tell everything to Claire. They were very close, the two of them, and he felt Claire deserved to know.
One day, Claire went down to the restricted section of the hospital, where Jacob did his experiments. He didn't push her away, and after a couple of weeks, she started helping him. They figured out new ways to kill these things, and they bonded over this. The two became pretty good friends, and whenever it was time for supper, Georgie, Claire, and Jacob would all sit together.
However, after a while, Jacob seemed to be acting a little strange.. around the time people started getting sick. It didn't bother Claire too much, but Georgie always thought it was bad. The day Georgie disappeared, she went straight to Jacob to see if he knew anything about it. He said he'd help her look first thing the next day.. but while Claire was looking around at the hungry things they caught.. she noticed Georgie's wallet on the floor. Once she went to pick it up, one of the hungry crashed into the glass of the window that separated Claire from the room it was in. When she looked up at it, the horrible truth was unleashed.
Claire ran to Jacob, screaming and cursing, and all he did was sit in his chair. He told her what his plan was, his voice started to fade. He planned to take her out in the city and kill her too. He wouldn't use her for an experiment, but he didn't want her to be part of this crumbling world. "..I don't want to be part of it..", was the last thing he said before he stuffed the end of his pistol into his mouth, and fired.
When Claire tried to explain what happened, no one believed her. Even Mary was suspicious of the girl. So, that night, when Claire was packing up her things to leave, Mary happily volunteered to knock her out.
Once Claire awoke, she was tied to Jacob's chair. She jerked and squirmed, trying to get free. The others had left her there, left her to die. Only a few of the group remained, staying up on the higher floors of the hospital. The second she got herself free, she went up. Listening to them from outside of rooms and in the dark spots of the building, she learned that they'd planned to kill the majority of the group anyway, and Jacob was part of it.. but Jacob gave up. They pinned it on her, and when the others found out the truth, it was too late. Now only remained the adults and Claire, all the kids and all the elderly, everyone who got sick, was gone. These were bad people, and Claire wouldn't have bad people around.
She set up all sorts of contraptions to get rid of them. One, a young man named Tyler, helped her out. Of course, they both got injured and put themselves in danger in the process, but it was worth it. They got rid of the people and out of the hospital. Her proudest moment of that was Mary. Tyler knocked Mary out, and tied her to Jacob's chair.. and Claire went through, releasing the hungry on the traitor.
The two worked together for a couple more days, but then Tyler got sick.. and that's when she learned of the sickness being in everyone..
Having just put to rest her last friend in this world, Claire journeys on, hoping to find someone else to survive the hungry with.
