It seemed like forever since she had found a safe place, but the Centennial Olympic Park seemed to be safe. Not completely, as every so often a straggler would find its way in the building. However, from certain places you were safe. The air vents that were in the ceilings, and walls were safe enough. Sometimes just staying high above the ground was enough.
Marie had just got back from a run, and relaxed her back against a wall toward a back door area. She had safely gotten back, but during the run she had tripped. Hurting her ankle pretty badly, and had to limp a long way back. It was just rolled, and if she stayed off it for a few days it'd be alright.
Her eyes rested across the room, and she noticed that something was different. It looked as though a few of the trash cans had been knocked over. Getting to her feet, with a bit of a struggle, she gripped the knife in her right hand. Slowly, she edged toward one of the walking paths. Making her way toward the first trash can. Then the next, and then the next.
As she came across the fourth trash can, something moved in her peripheral vision, causing her to take a tumble from trying to turn around so quickly. "Shit!" Her eyes focused as it came closer. She had never really decided on a name for them. She just called them things, or fuckers. Which really wasn't that appropriate. It came toward her, and she smirked with sarcasm. "Yeah, fucker, you like that? Come over here, give me a fucking kiss!"
It continued to come at her, until it fell to the ground. She rolled over with it on top of her a few times, before she could manage to straddle it. Using both hands she slammed her knife in its throat. Which didn't really do much, except temporarily phase it. Then, she scrambled away. It rolled toward her, blood pouring from its mouth. She finally got to her foot, and started limping toward the nearest staircase.
Naturally, the one she came toward was blocked. "Damn it! Wrong one." She had one barricaded to prevent one side from being entered, but the other she had a secret way of getting up. Though with her rolled ankle it might not be easy. Turning, and looping around she moved away from the fucker. Shuffling toward the staircase, which was basically on the other side of the garden.
She was just rounding it when she heard a noise. Her eyes flew open, and her eyebrows pulled together. It was loud. Could have been a shotgun, possibly just someone kicking in a door. The thing got distracted with the noise, and headed toward it. Marie fell to the ground, hiding beneath the stairs, which was completely dark underneath. Without any lighting it was nearly impossible to see her.
Marie peaked out from the stairs, trying to get a glimpse of the noise. Everything was quiet again though, and she continued looking. "What the he-..." She cut off when she heard another noise. It sounded like that thing had fallen over, or something. Maybe someone took it down. She really needed to figure out how to kill them.
