“I was always on my own in a way.” Orion looked at her. He never felt lonely. The concept itself was hard to comprehend. He had people in his life before, just his brother and some friends. Now, he didn’t even know if his brother was alive or dead. He suspected he lived through it. His brother, albeit not the sharpest tool in the shed was capable and had good instincts. Like an animal. But, even thinking of that and of now he found himself feeling no different at all.
When he was on his own he could hear his own thoughts. When he was with people they had a million concerns and questions and worried about every single detail. It bothered him. They should just accept the world as it was and live in it. “Feeding the animals” - he said. “There are chickens, a cow and two hogs in this farm. I left the rest of them go since they could attract the undead. Other than that, there is no running water so all we have is what I can fit in the bathtub.” - he said pointing in the direction of the barn.
“But it will be dark soon; you can help me out tomorrow. You can take any of the rooms upstairs. Like I said, there’s no one else staying here.” - He said turning because the conversation reminded him the cow was still out pasturing. He meant to exit by the back door and bring it back quickly. The animal never strayed too far from the farm. It was almost like she knew this was her home. Orion was a little jealous. He had never felt rooted to a place. Probably never would.
